About Oudtshoorn
THE OUDTSHOORN AREA
Oudtshoorn is the OSTRICH capital of the world. The world's biggest bird is just one of the many attractions in this area of contrast and beauty. There are 3 ostrich show farms to choose from
The region is home to the spectacular CANGO CAVES, Africa's largest show cave; an ecological hotspot where three distinct plant biomes (succulent karoo, cape thicket, and fynbos) converge plus the SWARTBERG MOUNTAIN RANGE, which is part of the Cape Floral World Heritage Site. Take a scenic drive over the SWARTBERG PASS which takes you over to the ever so charming PRINCE ALBERT. From there take the drive through MEIRINGSPOORT which is like a small Canyon and visit the WATERFALL that is a short walk.
For the more adventurous at heart, you can do a day trip into the remote and rugged GAMKASKLOOF VALLEY, otherwise, known as "DIE HELL"
Hiking trails in the area- CAPE NATURE and NATURE CONSERVATION and the RUST & VREDE WATERFALL
We are situated on one of the longest wine routes, Cape Route 62. Visit GRUNDHEIM WINE CELLER in Volmoed, KARUSA VINEYARD in Schoemanshoek Valley or take a drive to Calitzdorp which is the port capital of South Africa.
The CANGO WILDLIFE RANCH and cheetah sanctuary are only 2km from town for encounters with white tigers, cheetahs, and Crocodile cage diving.
Oudtshoorn showcases the CP NEL MUSEUM, ARBEIDSGENOT (home of the well known Afrikaans writer, CJ Langenhoven) & LE ROUX TOWNHOUSE with the fascinating history of the region and has been voted one of the country's best small museums.
Some more to does: MA BETTY'S XHOSA CULTURAL EXPERIENCE, feeding of giraffes at CHANDELIER, game drives at BUFFELSDRIFT, olive tasting at SURVAL Olive Estate, playing golf at OUDTSHOORN GOLF COURSE, animal farm for the young ones at WILGELWANDEL and some early morning encounters with the MEERKATS.
